Located on Australia’s south-east coast of the Tasman Sea, Sydney is the state capital of New South Wales.

Superlative Sydney is Australia’s largest, most populous and oldest city. It is Australia’s largest port, largest financial, industrial & cultural center; in downtown is the largest agglomeration of skyscrapers, shops, galleries, bars and restaurants. It is also an international tourist destination.

The city is dominated by the harbor, which people have described as one of the most spectacular in the world. There are three things which you must not – and indeed cannot – miss. Firstly, there is Sydney Harbor Bridge, one of the largest single-arch bridges in the world.

Harbour bridge in the fog

Secondly, the Sydney Opera House is a landmark which most visitors anticipate with pleasure. Finally, don’t miss Fort Denison, where prisoners were kept in solitary confinement for days on a diet of bread and water.
The best way to get around is by boat or hydrofoil, both of which have regular services leaving from Circular Quay. If you prefer to do things at your own pace, why not hire one of the many boats available for this purpose?

Water plays a very big role in the inhabitants’ leisure time. There are 27 miles of beaches to the north and south of Sydney, so it’s hardly surprising that the locals spend so much time in the water! Two of the best-known beaches are Manly Beach and Bondi Beach, where the ‘beautiful young people’ of Sydney have been showing off their skills ever since surfing carnivals were first organized there.
For the best view of Sydney, visit Center Point Tower. High above the city you can dine in the revolving restaurant, and no sea-food lover should leave Sydney without trying the world-famous Sydney Rock Oysters. For the night-owls among you, make sure you go to Oxford Street and King’s Cross to check out the city’s nightlife.
And you can’t leave Sydney without first visiting the Sydney Aquarium and Taronga Zoo.

For those tourists who would also like to see somewhere other than Sydney, the Blue Mountains are well worth a visit. They get their name from the fact that when you look at them from a distance, they are covered in a blue mist which comes from the small drops of eucalyptus oil in the air. Wentworth Falls and the view from the Scenic Skyway (a cable car high in the sky) are both breathtaking.
